The district of Guntur is often referred to as the Educational mainland of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The word Guntur originally means in Sanskrit ‘Garthapuri’, which has some reference to some temple of Lord Shiva. The district has a long coastline of about 100 kilometres along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Guntur is surrounded by Krishna, Prakasam, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda distrihct and the Bay of Bengal. The district spans to an area of 11391 sq kms.
The Guntur District is one of the main base regions for education in Andhra Pradesh. It has many famous educational institutes. The region does not support a lot of Agriculture. Paddy, Tobacco and cotton are the main crops that are grown here. Guntur has Telugu as its principle language. A lot of Temples are found in this region. One interesting fact about Guntur is that Historians have found some evidence of prehistoric men from the Palaeolithic age living in this region.
